Hurricane Charley Fire Photo Gallery

On August 13, 2004 Charlotte County was struck by category four Hurricane Charley. The eye of the hurricane came ashore in the downtown area of Punta Gorda delivering a devastating blow to areas of Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. The damage to homes and businesses was severe with over 4000 structures destroyed and another 6000 or more with varying degrees of damage. Sixteen people were killed in Charlotte County and many more injured. Among the destroyed buildings were six public schools, hundreds of homes and four county fire stations.
