HOT TOPICS Murdock Village back on track - At their October 24 meeting County Commissioners selected Kitson & Partners as the developer for the 1,200 acre redevelopment project. In April 2006 the Commissioners had selected Stock Development, who eventually decided to drop out of the project citing a change in market conditions. The Murdock Village is now back on track with the selection of Kitson and Partners. It is anticipated that any time lost will be made up during the permitting and pre-construction period. Public Safety Building under construction - After breaking ground this summer, the project on Airport Road in Punta Gorda is moving along very quickly. Walls are already being placed via large cranes and construction is expected to be completed by next hurricane season. The Emergency Operations Center, which suffered significant damage in Hurricane Charley, will be relocated to the new 34,000 sq. ft. Public Safety Building, along with Fire/EMS headquarters, Sheriff's emergency operations, 2-1-1 and a backup 9-1-1 operations. Hardened to withstand 170 mph winds the facility is budgeted at $8.4 million. Conservation Charlotte - Conservation of environmentally sensitive lands is a critical issue as Charlotte County continues to grow. On the current ballot, there is an item asking voters to approve bonds for the acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands. If approved, each property owner would be taxed 0.20 mills for a period of 20 years with the funds being used to purchase land from willing sellers. The average homeowner with homesteaded property would pay approximately $35 per year. While it is recognized that this may not be the perfect time to ask our residents to approve this tax, at the rate that these environmentally sensitive lands are being developed, we need to act quickly to preserve these properties for our future. We have posted an informative video and a detailed brochure on line. It's your choice, Vote November 7.
